Setup assistant
A help agent that rides along from sign-up to your inbox. It answers from these docs, shows you where to click, and can do a step with you.
The setup assistant helps you from the moment you create an account until you reach your inbox. Open it with the Questions? or Setup help button in the lower-right corner of the setup screens.
It can do three things:
- Answer. It reads these docs live, so its answers match the product as it is today. It links the page it used. For a question about safety or privacy, it quotes our Security and Privacy pages word for word.
- Show you. It lights up the control you need, with a short note beside it.
- Do a step with you. When you ask, it can open a dialog, pick an option, or go to the next step. It can also type a value that you gave it, such as your email address. Its pointer moves to the control first. While it works on the page, the panel folds to a small bar that says what it is doing. When it finishes the steps, the panel opens again.
It reads the screen
The assistant sees the setup screen as you do. It sees the headings, the buttons, and the error messages. For each field, it sees only one of three states: empty, filled, or wrong. It never reads what you typed. After it presses a button, it looks at the screen again before it says what comes next.
It knows the hard parts
Most setup trouble happens on your provider's own pages. An example is a Google account with no app password page, or a phone platform that refuses a key. The assistant knows the common causes of each error that CommSync shows. It gives you the most likely cause and the one fix for it, and it shows you the field where the value goes. You always paste a password or a key yourself.
For the same answers in the docs, see When the provider refuses the app password and the page of your phone provider.
It notices when you pause
The assistant offers help at the moments when setup gets hard. These moments include an error on the screen, a long pause, and going back and forth between options. They also include closing a dialog before it finishes, and coming back to the tab. A short note with one button shows beside the Setup help button. When the panel is open, an error note shows above the message box instead.
Nothing happens until you press the button on the note. You can close any note, and the assistant offers each kind of help at most once on a screen. It never makes up a deadline, a discount, or a number to hurry you.
After setup
The assistant can still help after you reach the inbox, at two moments. It shows one note at a time, and never while a conversation is open.
- A line stops syncing. For example, Google and Apple cancel every app password when you change your account password. The note names the line and what broke. Press Fix it with me to go to the line in Settings. The assistant explains the cause and shows you the fix button.
- Your first reply. In your first two weeks, when someone writes to you and you have not sent from CommSync yet, a note offers to show you where to reply. Press Show me to open the conversation. The reply box lights up, with the line that the reply goes out from.
Only the people who can fix a line see its note: owners, admins, and the person who connected the line. Close a note, and it does not come back. A new problem on the same line shows a new note.
Where it shows
| Screen | What it can help with |
|---|---|
| Sign in and create account | Sign in, reset a password, fill in your name and email address |
| Verify your email | Send a new code, change the sign-up address |
| Your workspace | Pick between Just me, Create a team, and Join a team |
| Your plan | Compare the plans and explain the trial |
| Set up CommSync | Connect a first email or text line, pick how much history to import |
In the inbox, the assistant stays while its panel is open, so you can finish a conversation that you started during setup. When you close it there, it goes away. For questions after setup, use Ask.
What it asks you to confirm
The assistant never changes your account by itself. For each of these, it shows a card, and nothing happens until you press the button on the card:
- Send a new verification code.
- Start the import of past mail for one email account.
- Test the saved sign-in of one email account.
- Send a note to the CommSync team. You can edit the note first. The team replies to the email address of your account.
It shows one card at a time. When you press Not now, nothing changes, and the assistant goes on from there.
What it never does
- It never asks for, types, or repeats a password, a verification code,
an app password, or a key. Do not paste one into the chat. If you do,
your browser removes it before it sends or saves the message, and the
chat shows
[hidden]in its place. - It never creates your account, signs you in, picks a plan, or pays.
- It never agrees to a provider sign-in for you. You complete the Google or Microsoft sign-in page yourself.
- It cannot see or click anything outside CommSync. For a step on another site, it gives you the steps and the docs page.
Screenshots
After you sign in, you can paste or attach a screenshot (PNG, JPEG, or WebP, up to 5 MB, two at a time). This helps with a step on another site, for example an error on a provider page. A vision model describes the screenshot to the assistant. The assistant reads text inside a screenshot as page content, never as instructions.
Privacy and limits
- The conversation stays in this browser tab for a few hours, so it survives a reload or a sign-in. CommSync never stores a screenshot.
- The answers run on the same zero-data-retention models as the other CommSync AI features.
- Setup help does not use your workspace AI credits.
- If you turned CommSync AI off in your settings, the assistant does not answer. Use Get free help setting this up instead.
When you need a person
Ask the assistant for a person at any time. It drafts a short note about the step that stops you. You check the note, and the team replies by email. Before you have an account, the assistant opens an email to the support address instead.
